Shou sugi ban

Handcrafted burnt wood

for timeless design

At Teun’s Timber, we specialize in the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban, where wood is charred to enhance both its durability and beauty. Every piece is burned by hand, revealing unique textures and tones that transform ordinary timber into striking design elements.

We craft bespoke facades, furniture, doors, and feature walls—all showcasing the natural character of the wood. Our process not only preserves the material, but also elevates it, creating a rich, tactile finish that blends tradition with modern design.

Sustainable, low maintenance, and absolutely beautiful

Shou Sugi Ban brings out the hidden beauty in wood—revealing deep textures, natural grain, and bold contrast. This ancient Japanese burning technique was originally used to preserve timber, making it resistant to fire, mold, and decay —perfect for cladding homes nestled in forested areas.

Beyond its durability, we love Shou Sugi Ban for the character it adds. It offers a whole new experience of wood—raw, refined, and completely unique.

Burning styles

The extent to which we burn wood depends on what you find beautiful. Many types of wood can be processed using this technique. The effect is different every time.
The intensity of the burn depends on your aesthetic preferences. Different wood types respond uniquely to the Shou Sugi Ban technique—no two results are ever the same. Each variation reveals a new texture, tone, and depth, allowing for truly custom finishes.

Flame finish

Our flame-finished Douglas wood has a distinctly modern edge. The pronounced grain and texture make it an ideal choice for bold accent walls in sleek, minimalist interiors.

Charred finish

Opting for a charred finish results in a deep, rich black tone. The texture of the burned wood adds an unexpected yet striking dimension, creating a sophisticated aesthetic.

Brushed finish

The brushed finish brings out a calm, deep brown color in the wood. The grain structure is accentuated, creating a tactile texture that's not only visible but also feels remarkable to the touch.

About us

We are Teun Pothof and Frank van Aken, the team behind Teun’s Timber.
Teun started the company five years ago, driven by his passion for architecture, wood, and fire. His fascination with Shou Sugi Ban led to the creation of Teun’s Timber. Frank joined later, and together we travel across the country, meeting architects, realtors, builders, and private clients. We work together to create the most beautiful Shou Sugi Ban projects, always with passion and joy for craftsmanship.
